According to the 2021 Census, 39.4% of Californians identity as “Hispanic.” The Manitos are native Spanish speakers who identify as Hispanic. The research for this project focuses on Manitos del Sur. The majority of group members reside in the Meadowview and Florin neighborhoods in Sacramento’s District 8, at zip codes 95832 and 95822.
Data from the 2021 Census suggests that people in this area are struggling. 20.1% of folks in these zip codes are at or below poverty level (State 12.3%), and only 11.9% have a bachelor degree or higher (State 36.2%). The employment rate here is 50.2% (State 57.6%). Data suggests that people in these zip codes struggle to find affordable housing. The percent of low income homeowners who pay more than 50% of their income on housing costs is 20.6% (9.88% Sacramento County). The Uncrowded Housing Indicator here is 23.7% (Sacramento County is 56.9%).
This is one of most culturally diverse areas not only in the United States but in the world. According to the Healthy Places Index (HPI), the likelihood that two people chosen randomly will be of different race/ethnicities is 99.7% in this unique area.
